Plant Care Guide: Broccoli – Di Ciccio

Broccoli ‘Di Ciccio’ is an heirloom variety known for its tender stems and multiple side shoots, making it a great choice for extended harvesting. It thrives in cooler weather and is packed with nutrients.

Planting

  • Best Time to Plant: Sow seeds in late summer to autumn for best results in cooler months. Ideal temperatures are 10-20°C.
  • Soil Preparation: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0, enriched with compost and organic matter.
  • Spacing: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep and 30-45 cm apart in rows spaced 60 cm apart.
  • Sunlight: Requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, watering at the base to avoid fungal diseases.

Care & Maintenance

  • Support: Not required, but plants benefit from firm soil to anchor roots.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced fertiliser every 3-4 weeks to support continuous growth.
  • Weeding: Keep the area weed-free to reduce competition for nutrients.
  • Mulching: Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Pests & Diseases

  • Common Pests: Cabbage white butterflies, aphids, and caterpillars can be problematic. Use insect netting or companion planting to deter them.
  • Common Diseases: Clubroot and powdery mildew can affect broccoli. Rotate crops yearly and ensure well-drained soil to prevent issues.

Companion Planting

  • Good Companions: Celery, onions, and chamomile help repel pests and enhance growth.
  • Avoid Planting Near: Strawberries and tomatoes, as they can compete for nutrients and attract pests.

Harvesting

  • When to Harvest: Ready in 50-70 days when the central head is firm and compact. Side shoots will continue to develop after the main harvest.
  • How to Harvest: Cut the central head at an angle, leaving the plant to produce more shoots.
  • Storage: Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or blanch and freeze for longer storage.

Bonus Tip

For a longer harvest period, pick side shoots regularly to encourage continuous production!

Happy gardening! 🌱
