Plant Care Guide: Rocket
Rocket (Eruca sativa), also known as arugula, is a fast-growing leafy green with a peppery flavour. It’s perfect for salads, sandwiches, and garnishes, and thrives in both garden beds and containers.
Planting
- Best Time to Plant: Sow seeds in autumn, winter, and early spring when temperatures are between 10-25°C.
- Soil Preparation: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0-7.0, enriched with compost.
- Spacing: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep and 10-15 cm apart in rows spaced 20 cm apart.
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade, especially in warmer climates.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging.
Care & Maintenance
- Support: Not required, as rocket is a low-growing leafy green.
- Fertilising: Apply a light application of liquid fertiliser every 2-3 weeks for optimal growth.
- Weeding: Keep the area weed-free to prevent competition for nutrients.
- Mulching: Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pests & Diseases
- Common Pests: Aphids and flea beetles can attack young leaves. Use insecticidal soap or companion planting to deter them.
- Common Diseases: Downy mildew and leaf spot can occur in humid conditions. Ensure good airflow and avoid overhead watering.
Companion Planting
- Good Companions: Lettuce, spinach, carrots, and radishes help improve growth and deter pests.
- Avoid Planting Near: Brassicas (e.g., cabbage, broccoli), as they compete for similar nutrients and attract the same pests.
Harvesting
- When to Harvest: Ready in 4-6 weeks when leaves are 10-15 cm long.
- How to Harvest: Pick outer leaves as needed or cut the whole plant 2-3 cm above the soil for regrowth.
- Storage: Store fresh leaves in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Bonus Tip
For continuous harvest, sow rocket seeds every few weeks throughout the growing season!
Happy gardening! 🌱
